From a styling perspective, one of the most common type of assistance that has been requested revolves around the gallery wall, and with our years spent with national retailer (and one of our favorite places for accessories, west elm) we have created quite a few. So we thought we would give our two cents and help you figure out how to create the perfect expression of who you are as well as showcase some of our favorite gallery walls. 1. Be yourself. It's so important to know who you are in design. You are truly creating a collaboration between yourself, your space, and the artists. So many clients prefer for us to "just do it" but you will be the one living there so enjoy it and enjoy the process!
2. Painter's tape. Don't be afraid, since there are no rules you really can't mess up. And this is where the handy painter's tape comes in handy so those "mishaps" only require removal of a piece of tape instead of patching thirteen holes in your wall only to start over. We always suggest taking advantage of your floor space as well and move and move and move around till you feel good.
3. Develop a theme. This doesn't have to be the art in itself. Maybe it comes through in the color palette or subject matter. But the point of a gallery wall is to be cohesive and convey a message together as a whole. Placement also matters in this theme, are is everything very linear and symmetrical? or you playing with different negative spaces?
4. Dare to be different! My favorite gallery walls are those that excite me in ways that aren't the norm. Floor to ceiling? Sure! Layering pieces on top of each other...YES! Although one of my best pieces of advice would also be to take a step back and edit. It almost always works if you remove one piece if you worry about going overboard. And when you have the whole flea market in the wall that perfect brass horn might look better as a bookend anyway ;)
And there you have it, a few of our "ideas" on creating the perfect gallery wall that hopefully differs from the typical how to guide. And if you're still stuck feel free to give us a ring, or heck a perfect opportunity to take advantage of our E-Design services! As always, thanks for reading we look forward to collaborating with you and thank you for making Interior Design Collaborative one of the top interior design firms in Orange County, CA!
