What is Organically Modern Design?

One of the most frequently asked questions by our potential clients is, “What is your design style?” Our answer is always that our job is to help them discover their own design style by guiding them through the fundamentals of classic design, while keeping them from making any mistakes. We always want the interior design we create for you to reflect you…not us!  But, with that being said, if one really wants to know what the personal interior design style of Interior Design Collaborative is, we would have to define it as Organically Modern.

What’s that?  We define Organically Modern as: clean lines, open spaces, minimalist simple architectural design in home interior and exterior features highlighting the natural setting, by utilizing natural materials such as stone, wood, steel and glass. From the interior finishes and furnishings aspect, we love mixing woods, stone, metals, and glass as well, then softening with Alpaca pillows, gorgeous cowhides, and luxurious silks and wool rugs and striking art pieces. These elements combine to beautifully compliment the features of modern architecture in residences of today.

If you follow us, you know that we are all about supporting our local architects, artisans and designers in Orange County….not only because they are local, but our opinion is many of the best are found here. Below is a home by Horst Architects that showcases what we would describe as Organically Modern:

People tend to associate modern as hard and cold. We couldn't disagree more. We like the answer our industry associates provide at Fresh Home as they state the following:

A common misconception is that modern design is cold and hard. It is many times the complete opposite, as modern design is more often warm and inviting, utilizing natural elements such as wood and stone, floor-to-ceiling stone fireplaces, vaulted post and beam wood ceilings,  all with large windows that let in natural light and the beauty of the outdoor features. What could add more character and warmth than these wonderfully modern features?  While the pattern may be linear, clean and uncluttered—there is definitely warmth to be found in modern architecture and interiors. Also, most modern plans contain fewer walls, thereby creating a more welcoming, open living space that most people crave. To continue this great read, click HERE.

Being able to define your style is an important step when working with a designer. Don't feel intimidated! We are here to help guide you and offer alternatives as well. If you are considering a new project, we recommend you start collecting images that you like. Although images of interiors are most helpful, we find unrelated ones are as well. For example, if something captures your attention in a fashion magazine with a fabric, or colors that draw you in in a travel magazine....save those images in a physical and/or electronic file. The next step is most important: using as many descriptive words that you can, define what it is you actually like and don't like about the images. When you meet with us for your consultation, reviewing these images and discussing them helps us understand you and your style. That is what makes working with Interior Design Collaborative a true collaborative experience! With our guidance and input, we help you to get to know you better! And we'll be honest…this is a great exercise to share over a glass of wine ;)

Our talented team of designers are ready to create a home that is designed specifically for you, regardless if you are drawn to Organically Modern, California Contemporary, Coastal Classic, or a combination of each! Let's collaborate and define your style today!
